Quit Sugar, Eat Almond Butter Cups!

I’m finally getting off of sugar and eating healthy treats for 2014! I am crazy about sweets. In denial of my sugar addiction, ahem, I was fooling myself for years, eating “raw cane sugar,” and “organic sugar.” Right. Sugar is a TOXIN and can cause a zillion poor health issues including Type 3 diabetes: Alzheimer’s.

My treats are actually good for you, are grain free, made with healthy fats, paleo proteins, and low glycemic sweeteners like maple syrup, coconut sugar, and raw honey.

A mighty thanks to Pinterest recipes! I’ve pinned my favorites, and gleaned and adapted to them to my healthy baking principles, and hope you can kick the SUGAR habit too!

Almond Butter Cups

In a saucepan:
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup organic cocoa powder
1/2 cup organic smooth almond butter (or part peanut butter)
1/4 cup raw honey or maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla
touch of salt

On low heat, melt all ingredients together, except vanilla. Add vanilla. Pour into miniature muffin cups, in a miniature muffin tin. Store in refrigerator, as they melt pretty quick. Makes 24 fabulous, little treats. (Alternate: leave out almond butter, and add 2 tsp peppermint extract and 1/4 cup coconut flour, for a chocolate-mint cup. Yum.)

  1. Sugar causes my lungs to overproduce mucus the likes of which you can’t imagine. I am going to try this recipe. I will swap out maple syrup for sugar free syrup and see how that works. 😀

    1. Yes the body’s defense against inflammation is to secrete mucus, so you’re having a strong reaction to refined sugars. (Watch for Candida overgrowth as well.) Jackie, be careful that your sugar free syrup is free of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (found in NutraSweet and Equal), sucralose (Splenda), and saccharin (Sweet’N Low)–as people commonly report headaches, dizziness, mood changes, abdominal pain and cramps, memory changes, fatigue and physical weakness related to consumption.

      1. Yes, I got that. I have lung issues and keep a long list of items I must avoid. This past week I had to add cumino and chili powder. I also cannot have dairy products, milk chocolate, oils, butter, margarine, mayonnaise, cole slaw or anything greasy. I can eat cottage cheese and dark chocolate though. 🙂 Thank you!
